We often don’t realize just how much we rely on our hands until something goes wrong. From typing and cooking to lifting a child or buttoning a shirt, healthy hands are essential to our daily lives. When pain, injury, or stiffness gets in the way, even simple tasks can feel overwhelming.

If you’re struggling with hand discomfort or a hand injury, know that you’re not alone, and help is available. At Charlottesville Orthopaedic Center, our experienced orthopedic team specializes in diagnosing and treating hand conditions with expert surgical and nonsurgical care.

Common Reasons for Hand Surgery

There are many different conditions that may lead someone to consider hand surgery. Some of the most common include:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Caused by pressure on the median nerve, leading to numbness, tingling, and weakness.
  • Trigger Finger: A condition where a finger gets stuck in a bent position and may snap when straightened.
  • Arthritis: Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can severely affect the joints in the hand and wrist.
  • Fractures and Dislocations: Broken bones or joint dislocations often require surgical repair to restore function.
  • Tendon and Ligament Injuries: Tears or ruptures can impair hand movement and grip strength.
  • Nerve Injuries: Damage to the nerves in the hand can cause loss of sensation and function.
  • Congenital Hand Differences: Some individuals are born with hand deformities that may require surgical correction.

Whether you’ve suffered an injury, developed a chronic condition, or noticed worsening symptoms over time, our team is here to help you regain comfort and control.

Signs You Might Need to See a Hand Surgeon

It’s not always easy to know when to seek specialist care, but here are some signs you shouldn’t ignore:

  • Persistent hand, wrist, or finger pain that doesn’t improve with rest
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations
  • Difficulty gripping, lifting, or using your hand normally
  • Visible deformity, swelling, or instability
  • Symptoms that worsen despite rest, bracing, or other conservative treatments

If any of these sound familiar, scheduling an evaluation with our team is a smart next step.

What to Expect During Your Hand Surgery Consultation

When you come in for your hand surgery consultation at Charlottesville Orthopaedic Center, we begin by taking the time to fully understand your symptoms and concerns. Our team will conduct a thorough evaluation of your hand, wrist, or arm to assess the underlying issues causing discomfort or dysfunction. This may include a detailed discussion about how your condition is affecting your daily life and any treatments you’ve already tried.

Depending on the nature of your symptoms, we may also recommend diagnostic imaging such as X-rays or an MRI to get a clearer view of the problem area. Once we’ve gathered all the necessary information, we’ll work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. Our approach is to offer the least invasive options first, but if surgery is necessary, we’ll walk you through all the available surgical options and help you make an informed decision about the best path forward for your health and lifestyle. At every step, we’ll ensure you have all the information you need to feel confident in your treatment choices.

Recovery After Hand Surgery

Recovery after hand surgery varies depending on the procedure and the individual, but most patients can expect a few common elements during their healing process. After surgery, you’ll likely experience some initial swelling and discomfort, which is normal and part of the body’s healing response. Depending on the procedure, many patients are able to start moving their hands gently within a few days, although more intensive use will typically come later.

The recovery timeline can range from a few weeks for simpler procedures to several months for more complex surgeries. Physical therapy is often a key part of recovery, helping you rebuild strength, flexibility, and overall function in your hand. Our team will work with you to create a rehabilitation plan tailored to your specific needs, ensuring that you regain the full range of motion and strength needed to return to your daily activities.

Throughout the process, we’ll provide guidance and support to make sure your recovery is as smooth and effective as possible, helping you get back to doing what you love as quickly and safely as possible.

Hand Surgery FAQs

What causes carpal tunnel syndrome and when do I need surgery?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve as it passes through the wrist, often due to repetitive hand movements, swelling, or underlying conditions like arthritis or diabetes. Surgery may be recommended if symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hand persist despite conservative treatments like splints, anti-inflammatory medications, or activity modification.

How long does it take to recover from carpal tunnel release surgery?

Recovery time varies depending on the severity of your condition and the type of procedure, but most patients can return to light activities within a few days to a week. Full recovery, including strength and dexterity, usually takes 4 to 6 weeks for minimally invasive surgery, and up to 3 months for more extensive cases.

What is the difference between non-surgical and surgical treatment for trigger finger?

Non-surgical treatments for trigger finger include rest, splinting, anti-inflammatory medications, and steroid injections. Surgery is considered when these treatments fail, or if the finger locks frequently. Surgical release is a quick outpatient procedure that relieves the tendon constriction and restores smooth finger movement.

Can I have hand surgery using only local anesthesia (wide-awake hand surgery)?

Yes. Many hand procedures can be performed using a technique called wide-awake local anesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT). This allows patients to stay awake without general anesthesia, reducing risks, speeding recovery, and allowing the surgeon to test finger movement during the procedure.

What are the risks and complications of hand surgery?

While hand surgery is generally safe, potential risks include infection, bleeding, nerve injury, stiffness, incomplete healing, or changes in sensation. Your surgeon will review specific risks based on your procedure and health history.

How much does hand surgery cost, and does insurance cover it?

The cost of hand surgery varies depending on the procedure and complexity. Many hand surgeries, including carpal tunnel release and trigger finger release, are covered by insurance when medically necessary. Our office can help you verify coverage and discuss out-of-pocket expenses before your procedure.

Will I need physical therapy or hand therapy after my surgery?

Most patients benefit from hand therapy after surgery to restore strength, flexibility, and function. A hand therapist can design a personalized program to help you recover quickly and prevent stiffness or loss of motion.

How soon after surgery can I return to daily activities or work?

Return to daily activities depends on the procedure and your recovery progress. Light activities are often possible within a few days, but lifting heavy objects or strenuous work may require several weeks. Your surgeon will provide specific guidelines tailored to your surgery.

What happens during tendon or nerve repair surgery in the hand?

During tendon or nerve repair surgery, the surgeon carefully locates the damaged tendon or nerve and repairs it using microsurgical techniques. The goal is to restore movement and sensation while minimizing scarring. These procedures are typically done on an outpatient basis with local or regional anesthesia.

Will hand surgery leave a scar or affect sensation in my fingers?

Most hand surgeries leave a small scar, which usually fades over time. Temporary numbness or tingling may occur but typically improves as the nerves heal. Permanent changes in sensation are rare and depend on the type of surgery and the condition being treated.
