That’s why we offer a wide range of splints and braces to help you recover safely, reduce pain, and get back to doing the things you love.

Whether you’re dealing with a recent fracture or ongoing joint instability, our experienced orthopedic specialists are here to guide you every step of the way. We also offer advanced thermoforming fracture care, providing custom-fit support with cutting-edge materials, all in the comfort of our clinic.

What Are Splints and Braces?

Splints and braces are external support devices designed to stabilize joints and bones, relieve pain, and promote healing.

Splints are usually used for temporary support. They’re non-circumferential and ideal for reducing swelling in the early stages of an injury. Braces, on the other hand, are often used longer-term. They provide stability and compression, help limit movement during healing, and in some cases, prevent injury from recurring.

Both can be custom-fitted to ensure they provide the right amount of support without compromising comfort or mobility.

We are also proud to offer thermoforming fracture care. This is an advanced technique that uses heat-moldable materials to create custom-fit splints and braces in real time.

Types of Splints and Braces We Offer

We provide a comprehensive selection of splints and braces tailored to meet your specific condition and lifestyle needs, including:

  • Functional Braces for support during physical activity.
  • Immobilizing Splints to keep an injured area stable.
  • Post-Operative Braces designed to protect surgical repairs.
  • Pediatric-Friendly Options designed with comfort and growth in mind.

Our team will assess your condition and fit you with the most appropriate device for your recovery.

What to Expect During Your Visit

When you visit Charlottesville Orthopaedic Center for splint or brace care, you’ll be welcomed by a team dedicated to your comfort and recovery. Your appointment will begin with a thorough evaluation where we will assess your injury or condition and determine the most appropriate support option for your needs.

If a splint or brace is recommended, we’ll custom-fit the device to ensure it’s comfortable, effective, and tailored to your lifestyle. You’ll also receive clear instructions on how to wear and care for your device at home, and we’ll schedule any necessary follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and make adjustments if needed. Our goal is to make the entire process as smooth and supportive as possible, so you can focus on healing and getting back to what you love.

“I went to Dr. Nielsen for a second opinion on a dislocated hand. My first surgeon recommended surgery without much consideration. A friend suggested Dr. Nielsen, who spent time reviewing my case and concluded that I only needed rehabilitation. He was right! He's an excellent doctor.”

I called for an appointment and had one in 2 days. As soon as I got in I was greeted and only had to wait a minute for the x-ray technician to come get me. Appointment only took 30 minutes and I left with a complete understanding of what was wrong with my wrist.
