Your feet and ankles are the foundation of your mobility, and when they’re in pain, your whole life can be affected. At Charlottesville Orthopaedic Center, we understand how frustrating it is to deal with discomfort, swelling, or instability in your lower extremities. Whether you’re managing chronic foot pain or recovering from a sudden injury, our experienced orthopedic specialists are here to help you find relief and get back on your feet.

Diagnosing Foot and Ankle Problems

Accurate diagnosis is the first step toward lasting relief. Our board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Nielsen, begins by taking the time to understand your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and activity level. We may use advanced imaging techniques such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans to identify the exact source of your discomfort. Whether it’s a fracture, tendon issue, or chronic condition, we’ll work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that fits your needs and goals.

Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Care in Charlottesville

At Charlottesville Orthopaedic Center, we treat a wide range of foot and ankle issues, from everyday aches to complex injuries. Our goal is always to restore your mobility and improve your quality of life using the most effective, evidence-based treatments available.

Here are some of the most common foot and ankle conditions we treat:

Plantar Fasciitis

A leading cause of heel pain, plantar fasciitis occurs when the thick band of tissue along the bottom of your foot becomes inflamed. This often causes stabbing pain with your first steps in the morning. We offer both conservative and advanced treatments to help reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Achilles Tendinitis

The Achilles tendon connects your calf muscles to your heel bone and is prone to overuse injuries, especially in runners or athletes. Achilles tendinitis can cause pain and stiffness at the back of the heel, particularly after physical activity. We provide therapies ranging from physical rehab to surgical intervention if necessary.

Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains happen when the ligaments that support your ankle stretch or tear, often due to a sudden twist or roll. Prompt treatment is essential to ensure proper healing and prevent chronic instability. We offer bracing, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgical repair.

Bunions

Bunions are bony bumps that form at the base of the big toe, often leading to pain, swelling, and changes in foot alignment. Our team offers both nonsurgical approaches and occasionally corrective surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.

Flat Feet

Flat feet, or fallen arches, can cause foot fatigue, pain, and even impact knee and back alignment. We evaluate your foot structure and offer orthotics, physical therapy, and other advanced treatment options.

Hammertoes

A hammertoe is a deformity where one or more toes bend abnormally at the middle joint, often causing pain and difficulty wearing shoes. We provide customized treatment plans, including shoe modifications, splints, and more.

Arthritis of the Foot and Ankle

Osteoarthritis and other forms of arthritis can cause joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Our specialists can help manage your symptoms through medications, joint injections, physical therapy, and surgical options when deemed appropriate.

Stress Fractures

Small cracks in bones, often caused by repetitive force or overuse, are known as stress fractures. These are common in runners and active individuals. We diagnose stress fractures early and guide you through a recovery plan that supports healing while keeping you as mobile as possible.

Tendon Tears and Ruptures

Tendon injuries in the foot and ankle, including tears or ruptures, can be debilitating if left untreated. We offer state-of-the-art imaging and techniques to repair damaged tendons and restore full function.

I want to share that my experience at this clinic was 10/10. I was supremely impressed by the friendliness of the front office staff, the x-ray technician, and the Physician Assistant, Natalie. I am so grateful I was referred here by Dr. Sam Spillman. Special thanks to Natalie for taking my appointment last minute, and providing exceptional care for my injured knee.

I cannot say enough great things about Charlottesville Orthopaedic Center! I fell and broke my wrist, called my PC and they suggested them. Natalie was awesome! The first broken bone I have ever had and I was quite nervous. The techs were great with X-rays and fitting me with a cast. After a few months of appointments I am on the road to recovery!! The ladies at the front desk are always friendly and make me feel welcome too. It is nice to know of such a great practice here in Charlottesville. Kudos!!
