In Office Fracture Care: Avoid The Emergency Room Fretured Image

You tie your shoelaces and begin your morning jog out on a mountain trail; you have a beautiful day ahead of you as you breathe the fresh air. Suddenly, you misjudge a step, your foot rolls, you hear a pop, and you’re on the ground in pain. You now have a concerns for a broken bone and need to figure out what to do. Learn the information you need to know about fractures from this blog post. If you have a broken bone in any area, Charlottesville Orthopaedic Center is here to help.

A fracture is a break in the continuity of the bone. This situation can occur from trauma such as a fall or car accident, or it can result from an underlying medical condition like osteoporosis or low bone density.

Types Of Fractures:

  1. Closed fracture: The bone does not protrude through the skin
  2. Open fracture: The bone has broken through the skin
  3. Stress fracture: Small cracks in the bone that occur from overuse
  4. Comminuted fracture: The bone has shattered into many pieces
  5. Displaced: The bone has moved out of its natural position
  6. Nondisplaced: The bone has not moved from its natural position

If you have a fracture, it’s essential to seek medical attention immediately. You should go to the emergency room if the bone is protruding through the skin; otherwise, most fractures can be treated in the office.

Charlottesville Orthopaedics Treatment

Treatment for fractures typically includes rest, ice, elevation, and stabilization. This procedure can take the form of wearing a splint or cast. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to align the bone correctly by inserting metal rods, screws, or plates to hold the bone in the correct place.

The duration of the treatment depends on the type of fracture and if the remedy the doctor orders is surgical or nonsurgical. Recovery can range from a few weeks to several months. Your individual treatment plan will be discussed at your office visit.

Suggestions During Recovery

– Keep the cast or splint dry unless told otherwise. Check it regularly for cracks, breaks, or loose ends.

– Follow your doctor’s orders on how much weight you can put on the affected limb.

– Do not remove the cast or splint yourself.

– Rest as much as possible

“I went to Dr. Nielsen for a second opinion on a dislocated hand. My first surgeon recommended surgery without much consideration. A friend suggested Dr. Nielsen, who spent time reviewing my case and concluded that I only needed rehabilitation. He was right! He's an excellent doctor.”

I was able to get a same day appointment after every other place I called turned me away. In the end, I was glad I got turned away elsewhere because I can’t imagine any other practice being more caring and understanding.
